Gary Onik, M.D.,
is a board-certified radiologist and the director of surgical imaging at
Celebration Health Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida. "I became a
radiologist because it was clear to me that the marriage of surgery and imaging
was going to open new vistas in the treatment of cancer patients. Our dedication
to this concept and our lack of satisfaction with the status quo has definitely
resulted in prolonged survival with fewer complications for our patients."
Dr. Onik is widely credited as being the father
of ultrasound-guided tumor ablation. He carried out the first ultrasound-guided
prostate cancer cryosurgical ablation in the early 1990s.
Dr. Onik received his undergraduate degree from
Harvard University and graduated from New York Medical College. He completed his
residency in radiology at the University of California--San Francisco. He has
also completed fellowships in computed tomography, ultrasound, and
interventional radiology at New England Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical
School.
The author of four academic medical textbooks,
Dr. Onik has also published more than seventy articles in peer-reviewed medical
journals. He has won numerous awards for his pioneering work in minimally
invasive surgery, including being nominated for the Russ Prize, the highest
honor of the National Academy of Engineering in bioengineering. Dr. Onik
continues to collaborate in ongoing research with many of the world's experts in
prostate cancer.
