Author Information

Susan Koenig, J.D., has practiced law in Nebraska for over
twenty years. She graduated magna cum laude from Drake University in 1977 and received
her juris doctor from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston,
Massachusetts. Susan is a member of the Family Law Sections of both the Nebraska
State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She began working with a
firm after graduation and formed her own practice in 1983 with an emphasis in Family Law. In the early years of her practice, she
focused on Juvenile Law, representing hundreds of children and parents in
custody and juvenile court proceedings.
When litigation is necessary, Susan believes that it is
important to have the case on two tracks simultaneously. The first is one which
supports a fair negotiated settlement with conflict and cost reduced. The second
is one which fully prepares the case for trial. With both operating at the same
time, Susan knows that the best outcome for the client is more likely to be
achieved.
The passion for being a voice for others and for making
change have inspired Susan's leadership on numerous social, legal, and political
issues on a local and national level. She has lobbied members of Congress,
testified before the Nebraska's Unicameral Judiciary Committee, written
editorials, and frequently been the expert that media turns to when it has
questions on current legal issues.
Susan is in great demand as a public speaker and teacher.
She been a guest lecturer, conference speaker, workshop presenter, and adjunct
professor on legal issues. Susan has taught social work and the law as an
adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, numerous law courses
at Metropolitan Community College, and taught a course on Women and the Law at Creighton University School of Law.
Susan is also a certified family law mediator.
She has received numerous awards for her service and
leadership including the Spirit of Women Foundation Award, the University of
Nebraska School of Social Work Professional Service Award, the Power of One
Award for service to children, and the Nebraska National Association of Social
Workers Citizen of the Year Award.
